Noise Attenuation: Editing, Stacking and Post-stack Velocity Filtering*

Updated: May 1, 2022

By John Wardell – May 1980

In this lecture we continue the discussion on additive noise attenuation methods. The previous lecture (GSH Movie Time – January 2022) discussed pre-stack methods of velocity filtering for the attenuation of coherent noise.

In this lecture we’ll look mainly at the post-stack methods of velocity filtering; but before we get on to that, we’ll look at two other methods that are invariably part of the wavelet processing sequence: Trace editing and stack. Both methods attenuate random and coherent noise.
