Reach for the Stars! STEM Festival

Saturday, September 30, 2023 - Reach for the Stars! STEM Festival for middle school girls at Rice University 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

The Event was sold out (200 girls + chaperones). Sara Tirado, Anglia Sweet, Clell “Mac” Hooton and Lisa Buckner hosted an outdoor exhibit booth and gave away 150 GSH logo coiled toy springs and “Earth is Calling” brochures. We demonstrated P&S wave motion using a rainbow coiled toy spring, explained seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation.

We also explained how geophysics applies to renewable energy. Students looked at a rock and mineral sample collection including one from the Hockley salt mine, first oil samples, cut-away geophone and an ION interpreted Gulf Coast regional seismic line. The keynote speaker at the event was Rice alum and astronaut Shannon Walker, the first woman to fly to the ISS on the Dragon as part of "Crew 1".
